Having grown up in France, I had never heard of urban foxes.
I found out about them when I first moved to London and heard them during the night. Foxes make a very particular sound which can be distressing to someone who’s never heard it before. You can imagine my panic waking up to it in the middle of the night; my first thought was someone was being strangled!
When I asked my flatmates about it the next day they told me about urban foxes being very in London suburbs. I was fascinated especially as I’d never seen a fox up close; in France they dwell in forests and fields as cities haven’t encroached so far into their territories.
I caught my first glimpse of an urban fox not long after that and take pictures of them whenever I can get close enough. There was even a family living in my back garden in Clapham a few years ago with three adorable little cubs!
Here are a few paintings inspired by London’s foxes.
