This was my first attempt at a lion in the stye of the Circus Lion. Again, qualities attributed to lions such as pride, courage and nobility of spirit, are explored here. This piece illustrates best my search for simplicity and balance. I have reduced the amount of brush strokes as much as possible whilst trying to frame the shape and beauty of the animal. The elephant here is innocently grooming itself and wrapping its trunk around its front foot, the outlines fading away, alluding to the fact the species is threatened by extinction. The title of this work is taken from one of Haruki Murakami's collection of short stories. Murakami's short stories are sometimes elusive and ethereal which I felt echoed the sentiment in this painting.
